Chlum nad Malší

No other Locality produce more Moldavites than the Gravel pit near the small Village Chlum nad Malší in South Bohemia, Czech Rep.. Moldavites from here often show a beautiful surface struktur (skulptation). The Moldavite mining here has been the most intense since dacades. Of corse it`s not allowed to enter the Mine without permission. A big part of the mined Moldavite are directly exported to China and USA. Since many years my Company Megalith gets a part of the needed Moldavites from Chlum.

The area includes plenty large holes filled with groundwater. The excavations go down to 12m. The sediments are washed and sorted by machines. Like in any other gravel pit. Unfortunately this procedure causes damages especially at the bigger Moldavites.

The Mine is surroundes by forest. The eastern part of this forest is called Malý Chlum (small Chlum). Moldavites from Malý Chlum often show deeper structures than the ones from the Mine.
The Moldavite bearing sediments in Malý Chlum are less rich and the pieces are much smaller in average than in Chlum. That`s why they are much higher in value.

In 2005 the fine gravel wasn`t searched for Moldavites by the Company.
A czech friend organised a permission for one afternoon to accsess to the pile for me and some friends. The Moldavite layers were especially rich at this time. The friendly excavator operator even made lines in the sandy-gravel for us. So we can better find the small Moldavite bits.
At this afternoon I found 139 Moldavites in 4,5 hours! Totalweight: 85,5g!
Obviously it wasn`t worthwhile for the company to search fine gravel-sand at this time.

1.Mai 1998 the happiest 0,90g ever!

End of the 90ies when I started to go to Czech, Chlum was the first stop. In these days it was not more than a big hole with a bagger and a trailer. At the sides of the area it was easily possible to find open Moldavite layers. Nobody cared much about it. Here I found my very first Moldavite! A few years later the place was fenced and garded 24/7.
